Friday, October 31, 2008… Boo!

This day in History

On this day in 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the church door in Leiden, triggering the reformation.  What is not so well known is that this was his second attempt- his first attempt was his grocery list, which unfortunately triggered a terrible break between the fishmongers and barley merchants.  Yes, tragic indeed.

Standard

Tonight was kind of a sad attempt at a game of field-disc, but we did manage to get it put together.  Standard: 2 games, 3/11, 3/7 with an east-west set and short field rules.  The weather was cool, but humid.  I think that’s it…

Teams

Team 1: Kink, Kendra, Mike, and Pilgrim

Team 2: Obama!, Biden, and Showkiller

Game One

History was on the side of the 2s as they enjoyed an historic landslide victory- as in they scored a bunch of points.   The 1s did manage to keep it respectable and held on to Indiana and Kansas (thank God!)  Final: 11-5, Team 2.

Game Two

The 1s did their best to lose this one, but managed to hang in there.  Final: 7-4, Team 1.

LoSG

Yes, but the 2s had the better night.  Points: 12-15

Counts

Not sure.  October is over now, and I’ve just about caught up with the database.  I still need to enter the power indexes, but whatever.  Look for Daily counts and various totals soon.

Schedule:

League and All-Star game on Sunday (2pm) start.  The Wailers scrimmage the B-boys on Tuesday, and then we have regular play on Wednesday.  Cheers mates.

This day in History

On this day in 1618, Sir Walter Raleigh was executed.  He, of course, is remembered for inventing cigarettes and NASCAR racing- which explains why he was excecuted.

Standard

Tonight was a COLD night for field-disc, with the temperature hanging somewhere in the 50s at first pull.  There were two games: 7/11, and 7/7 with an east-west set, plus some visitors: Arpat (back briefly from England) and Canadan- who is down checking on his fishies.  Glub, glub, little guys!

Teams

Team 1: Square, Kendra, Puller, AB, Kink, Mike, and Lyle

Team 2: Dred, Canadan, Wheels, Jonathan, Arpat, Seth, and Obama!

Game One

The 2s jumped to a huge lead, taking 6 of the first 7 points.  The 1s battled back valiantly, and won the second half 7-4.  Final: 11-8, Team 2.

Game Two

This game was fairly similar to the first, with the 2s charging out of the game, and the 1s playing catch up.  Since this was a short gate, the 1s just couldn’t make up any time.   Final: 7-5, Team 2.

LoSG

 No.  Points: 13-18

Counts

Team 2: A lot of games.  Team 1: Very few.

This day in History

On this day in 1947, Walt Disney testified in Congress before HUAC- House Un-American Activities Committee.  What did Walt do?  He identified people in his organization whom he believed to be communists.  Among them, of course, was Eey-or, the 7 Dwarves (all except Dopey), and most tragically, Thumper.

Standard

Tonight was a fine night for field disc as the 1s and 2s did battle yet again on a pleasant night.   The weather was humid, with a temp in the high 70s at first pull.  Also, the field was set east-west, and we had two games, 5/11 and 4/7

Teams

Team 1: Kink, Mike, Dred, Kendra, and K-swiss

Team 2: Surly, Jeckyl, Stripes, Jackie, and Zen

Game One

The 1s held the lead through the mid-point, but then the 2s rolled up their sleeves and went on a 6-2 run.  Final: 11-8, Team 2.

Game Two

I’m not quite sure why, but the 1s dominated in this one, going up 4-0.  The 2s battled back, and did win the 2nd half, 4-3.  Have you done the math yet?  Final: 7-4, Team 1.

This day in History

On this day in 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis got ridiculously dangerous as the US announced a quarantine around Cuba.  JFK earned the respect of the world by being openly prepared to destroy it- actually, that’s not fair.  JFK actually did a good job of holding off his nutball generals who wanted to immediately invade.  RFK also performed quite well as well.

Standard

1 game, 7/11, with an east-west set as the soccer kids again muscled in for space.   The weather was kind of nice- humid, but upper 70s at first pull.

Teams

Team 1: Puller, Zen, Mike Jackie, Barbados Brian, Pilgrim, Wayne, AB, and Kink

Team 2: Dred, Seth, Lyle, Stripes, Showkiller, Puller, Wheels, and Kendra,

Game One

This was a pretty good game, but we had revolving players as various folks had to leave- something about the World Series.  Anyway, despite this, the two teams ran neck and neck all the way to the 25th point.  The 2s then received the pull and quickly scored.  Final: 13-12, Team 2.

This day in History

On this day in 533, the Byzantine General Belisarius entered Carthage after defeating the Vandals.  Belisarius, of course, was getting revenge for the spray-painting and broken glass down town.  Belisarius was able to track them down after spotting the numerous “We Vandals Rulez!” tags in the parking garage.

Standard

Tonight was a fine night of field-disc, with lower humidity than usual and a light wind blowing from east to west.  The field, of course, was set east-west, and we did have to contend with the street urchins for space.  By the way, two games 7/11 with a temp in the low 80s at first pull.

Teams

Team 1: Kink, Stripes, Showkiller, Coleman, Marta, Mike, Jonathan, Kendra, and AB

Team 2: Robber, Jackie, Lyle, Dred, Puller, Square, Seth, and Brian

Game One

This was a really close game, with the 2s taking the lead at the 7th point and then hanging on.  Though the 1s were able to stay step for step, they could never completely close the gap, and so the 2s escape with no need for overtime.  Fina: 11-9, Team 2.

Game Two

The 2s picked up where they left off and held the lead through 12 points.  At the 14th, it was tied, and then the 1s- with some minor trash-talking by a jerk who was a 1, were able to pull ahead and win.   Final: 11-9, Team 1.

LoSG

Yes! And to perfection it did occur.  Points: 20-20

This day in History

On this day in 680, the Battle of Karbala took place.  Basically, the followers of one Islamic leader defeated and decapitated the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.  As a result, Islam split into two groups: The Shi-ites (followers of the dead grandson) and the Sunnis (followers of the victor).  Don’t know the difference?  That’s ok.  Neither did our President until a couple of years ago.  Who needs all that fancy book learnin’ anyway?

Standard

One game, 3/11, with a short-field, and short-field rules.  The weather was reasonable- upper 79 or 80 at first pull, and nice and humid.

Teams

Team 1: Kink, Seth, and Mike

Team 2: Lyle, K-swiss, and Johnny

Game One

The 2s got a break early and had the game first under control for most of the night, enjoying a 3 point lead at the 13th, 15th, and 17th points.  The 1s then rallied and forced overtime, eventually going all day long.  In the end, Johnny found Lyle for the game.  Final: 13-12, Team 2.

This day in History

On this day, there was some nasty fighting near Aachen, just across the border in Germany.  Capt. Bobbie Brown was awarded the Medal of Honor for this—I know, I can see the Whitney Houston joke here as well, but c’mon- he won the medal of honor and lived.  Plus, I think I read about him in Stephen Abrose’s Citizen Soldiers. Basically, hand to hand fighting in the mud, and almost everyone dies.  Lovely, right?

Standard

Weather: Not too hot, but extremely humid.  Maybe upper 70s, overcast, and the slimiest of discs.

Field set: East-West

Games: 1 game, 7/11 that went into over time.

Unusual occurrences: Fighting for space with soccer kids.  Stupid child labor laws…

Teams

Team 1: Kink, Showkiller, AB, Mike, Mark, Lyle, Kendra, and Coleman

Team 2: Pilgrim, Dred, Seth, Marta, Ashton, Pretty Boy, Puller, and Amber (not Arizona Jim’s)

Game One

This game went all day long, and was actually a great game that was close the entire night.  After trading the lead all night, the 1s scored at forced OT at 10s.  At 12-11, it looked like the 2s were finished, but then they capitalized on two 1s turns, tying it, and then taking the game.

Game Two

This day in History

On this day in 1993, the events portrayed in Black Hawk Down took place.  Basically, the US forces went to Mogadishu, Somalia to try and prevent a famine that was gripping the nation.  A warlord, however, was interfering with the humanitarian aid, so the US tried to capture him.  This resulted in two helicopters being knocked down, and a chaos as the US tried to rescue the survivors.  Kind of hard to make a joke about this, so I won’t.

Standard

It was a lovely night of field-disc, with only one game of 5/11, with an East-West set.  The temperature was quite pleasant, feeling extra-Octobery- which means low humidity and temps in the mid-70s.

Teams

Team 1: Mike, Lyle, Dred, Wayne, Square, and Denyce

Team 2: Amber, K-swiss, Kink, Coleman, and Johnny

Game One

The 2s jumped to an early lead, but then the 1s came storming back on the “merit” of hammers.  There were then ties at 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, and 10s.  In a short overtime, the 1s coughed up the plate at inopportune moments, and so that was that.  Final: 12-10, Team 2.

On this day in 1982, Epcot Center opened, and I’m happy to report that it’s now been boring young children for 26 years.  Way to go, Walt!

Quick and dirty: Two games, 7/11 with an East-West set, and a field that is as hard as brick, and covered with the debris of tail-gating.  So basically, it’s just great.  The temperature was decidedly cool and relatively dry.  I guess that’s it.

Team 1: Mike, Showkiller, Kink, Square, Puller, Dred, and Prism

Team 2: Kendra, Wheels, Ghengis, Robber, Seth, Lyle, AB, and Cinco

Game One: This was a bit of an ugly affair, with the 1s taking a huge lead, and then doing its best to blow it.  At 9-3, it was a done deal.  At 10-7, nobody was quite so sure.  In the end though, a Square huck to Prism ended the madness.  Final: 11-7, Team 1.

Game Two: It was close early, but then the 1s made multiple unforced errors.  Really, that’s about it.  Final: 11-6, Team 2.

The LoSG did in fact occur.  Points: 17-18 (pretty close)

October Count: 1-1

Fall Series: Not sure.  I’ll check later.

Schedule: Game Friday, League Sunday.  I hope to see you at both.

Boxscores are below the fold.
