On this day in 1918, the battle of the Meuse took place.  Basically, the Germans were losing the war- they were running out of supplies and fresh, warm bodies.  The trenches proved to be an insatiable beast, and so in an attempt to win the war before the intervention of the United States, the Germans threw everything that they had at Paris.  The Germans did come close, but unfortunately for them, they ran out of men before the French ran out of bullets.  Yay democracy!   The Great War, for the record, was the worst war ever.  Ever!  Well, check that.  The Thirty Years War also sucked.

Tonight was a beautiful night for field-disc, and thank goodness that there were no wars- other than Iraq and Afghanistan- but they don’t really count anymore since its kind of hard to defeat “terrorism.”  Those two will join our other failed wars, including those on poverty and drugs.  Anyhoo, Standard stuff:  1.1 games (seriously!) of 6/11 and 6/3.  There was an East-West set, as we jockeyed for territory against some pagans who were participating in some anachronistic harvest celebration to appease the Great Mother who feeds us all.  Are you reading this?  Seriously, are you?  Of course not.  Quick! Scan down and see if you see your name!

Team 1:  Mike, Bubba, Kink, Dred, A shiny Surly, and Showkiller.

Team 2: K-swiss, Lyle, Kendra, Wheels, Seth, and the bruiser with a heart of gold that we simply call “Wayne”

Game One: This was a fairly tight game with the 1s and 2s racing neck and neck all the way to the 16th point.  After that, the 2s went on a 3-1 run.  Not quite sure how the 2s pulled it off, but they did.  Final: 11-9, Team 2.

Game Two:  This game was not completed- mainly because the pole guys showed up and started placing dangerous objects all over the field.  At 3-2 (1s), we were prepared to persevere onwards, but then Showkiller got whacked in the eye by a disc.  After that, we all packed up and went home to catch the debate- well, that’s what I did because I’m a geek who follows elections.  Final: NO DECISION, 3-2, Team 1 had the lead.

There was no LoSG, but the scores were close: 12-13

Fall and September counts: 6-11

Boxscores are below the fold.

See you Wednesday- there will be no Sunday play until the conclusion of League.

There was no recorded game on Friday, September 19 or Sunday, September 24, 2008 due to Sectionals.  As for this day in history, there’s nothing really.  An emperor died and the Byzantines went into a steep and steady decline.  It would culminate with the Turks blowing huge holes in the walls of Constantinople and rushing through.  They then sacked the city and slaughtered the population.  Bummer, eh?

Tonight was actually a great night for field-disc as long as you weren’t a 1.  If you were a 1, then it was very long and disastrous.. sort of like the final days of the Byzantines.  Standard: the weather was great- not humid and low 70s at first pull with a moderate breeze blowing out of the southeast.  There were two games, 7/11 with an east-west set.   Really, everything was just nice.

Team 1:  Lyle, Mike, Joseph, Square, Jonathan the Pirate King, Smarta-Marta, Kink, and Julie

Team 2: Seth, Robber, Kendra, Showkiller, Coleman, Wheels, Bubba, and Dred

Game One: The 1s were absolutely crushed.  Seriously, there’s nothing else to say.  Who would have thought that the 1s had trouble matching up.  But at least, the 1s were able to threaten with the deep cut all night long… oh, no wait.  They couldn’t.  But, at least the 2s pulled off the zone when it was clear that victory was imminent… Oh, no wait.  They didn’t!  Bravo 2s.  Bravo.  Final: 11-3, Team 2.

Game Two: The 1s jumped to a lead and played much better, but then three easy turns in a row (Mike, Jonathan, AB) resulted in quick scores, and after that, the 2s had the edge.  Final: 11-7, Team 2.

The LoSG most certainly did not occur: 14-22

Fall and September counts: 6-10

On this day in history in 1862, the Battle of Antietam took place.  This is perhaps America’s finest moment, because two of our nation’s two biggest idiots clashed in somebody’s cornfield in some ridiculously insignificant place called “Maryland” (no offense Ryan-aka “Hollywood”- who I think hails from there, but I suspect stopped reading some time ago, so screw him).  And who are these idiots, you ask? Why, that was Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan.  Lee was an idiot for invading the north when it was completely unnecessary. As for McClellan, he did everything he could possibly do to lose the battle, but was luckily able to pull off the draw.  It wasn’t like he had found Lee’s entire battle plan in a cigar box.  No, wait! He did.  Still, Lee was the bigger idiot.  After all, he attempted a similar invasion the following year, resulting in his defeat at Gettysburg.  Moron.

Though the sky threatened imminent death and destruction, the thunder boomers passed safely by, and so there was a game.  Standard: fine weather (ironically) with an east-west set.  Oh, and it should be assumed that the weather was nice and “augusty” until I say otherwise.  By the way, there were two games, 7/11 and 7/7 respectively.

Team 1: Jackie, Kink, Stripes, Square, Showkiller, Jonathan “The Pirate King”, and Zen (who was dressed like Leathers)

Team 2: Mike, Smarta-Marta, Wheels, AB, Kendra, Puller, Lyle, and Pilgrim

Game One: You know- the 1s just couldn’t get their act together.  This game quickly got out of hand as virtually every 1 had an unforced, goal line turn.  Odd.  So odd… Anyway, the tragedy quickly transformed into farce as the 2s rolled.  Final: 11-6, Team 2.

Game Two: This was a great game, in that it was tight for all 13 points.  The 1s did get the lead at the 5th point, and were able to hold on as tie was greeted by tie.  Final: 7-6, Team 1.

The LoSG technically occurred, but the 2s were the more dominant team.  Points: 13-18

September and Fall Series count: 6-8

Boxscores are below the fold.

Database- still working on it…

Sunday, September 14 2008

On this day in 1901, President McKinley died.  Somebody shot him for some reason.  Eh.  That’s all I got.  Sorry people.

Tonight was a fine night of field-disc, so here’s the standard stuff: East-West set, quite hot and humid, with two games of 7/11.

Team 1: Mike, Redeemed, Robber, Jonathan the Pirate King, Coach, Kink, Julie and Showkiller

Team 2: Zen, Coleman, Puller, Johnny, Surly, Wheels, Bubba, Lyle, Marta, and Joe Cool

Game One:  The 1s took the lead early, and basically traded points after that, employing the JBS to perfection.  Certainly, that wasn’t the plan, but hey- it worked.  Final: 11-8, Team 1

Game Two: There was no need for the JBS in this, since the 2s dominated.  School was in as Smarta-Marta single-handedly beat the living snot out of the 1s.  Nope- there’s no denying it.  Final: 11-5, Team 2

The LoSG technically occurred, but the 2s were the more dominant team.  Points: 16-19

September and Fall Series count: 5-7

Boxscores are below the fold.

Database- I got through the 1s or 2nd game of September.

That’s it.  Sorry for the short report.

September 12, 2008

On this day in history, Henry Hudson discovered the Hudson River.  He then pushed west in search of that elusive “Northwest Passage”.  Unfortunately for him and his son, the rest of the crew wasn’t so eager to continue on.  Plus, it was cold- very cold.  So, like any angry, rebellious sailor crew, they mutinied.  Hudson and his son were put in an open boat and cast adrift, never to be seen again.  Who’s laughing now, sunshine?

Today, nobody was set adrift.  Instead, we had some classic JJ play.  Standard: 2 games, 6/11 with an East-West set.  The temperature was what you’d expect for mid-September (hot, humid), but all things considered it wasn’t terrible.  Oh, and the bugs were bad.  Zen smelled like he’d fallen into a vat of bug spray, and for a while, threw the disc like his hands were oily.  Coincidence? I think not.

Team 1: Denyce, Zen, Puller, Square, Mike, Wayne, Kink, and AB

Team 2: Marathon (John D), K-swiss, Surley, Julie, Kendra, Coach, and Johnny

Game One: This was an interesting match-up, in that the two best throwers in the modern history of JJ (Surley, K-Swiss) were paired up, making the huck game a virtual must.  And so, with the strong play of John D early on, the 2s got the lead and held on for a while.  The 1s though- with a remarkably old cup- ran a nice Z that forced some turns.  At 8-8, it was anybody’s game.  The 1s though, were able to convert, whereas the 2s weren’t and so that was that.  Final: 11-8, Team 1.

Game Two: It looked as if the 1s were going to run away with this one as well, but with Square jumping sides, the whole game changed.  The 1s and 2s then traded jabs like two exhausted punch-drunk hobos fighting for the remnants of a ham sandwich on rye, and quite frankly, the 2s just wanted it more.  Final: 9-8, Team 2.

The LoSG occurred yet again.  19-17

September and Fall Series Count: 4-6

Boxscores are below the fold.

I have vowed to update the database (from July 6 to September 12) this weekend.  I hope I wasn’t lying.   I might have been, though.

On this day of whenever, stuff happened.  There were a couple of assassinations, something nobody’s ever heard of opened, and the British attacked something that they don’t own anymore.  Yeah, that sums it up.  Oh, and happy birthday to Mrs. Showkiller.

Tonight was a fine night for field-disc as the 1s and 2s showed up to play in the rain.  The field was set east-west, and we had two games of 6/11.  The weather was moderate, with the rain stopping right before the first pull.

Team 1: Mike, Kink, Pilgrim, Jonathan the Pirate King,  Puller, AB, and the Redeemed.

Team 2: Kendra, Joseph, Trey, Jeckyl, Wheels, and Obama!

Game One: This was a fairly straight forward blood-bath.  The 1s came out on fire, with Kink throwing assists like a patron throwing tomatoes at a bad vaudeville show.  Yeah, that description sucks.  Whatever.  Final: 11-4, Team 1

Game Two: The 2s played much better in this one and took the early lead, and even got cocky enough to run some sort of weird zone which Coach would have loved.  The 1s though, were able to keep the game close.  The 2s though opened it up, and kept the win.  Final: 11-7, Team 2.

The LoSG did occur. Points: 18-15

On this day in 70 AD, Jerusalem was captured by the Roman General Titus and looted.  Luckily for the Jews though, everything was smooth sailing after that!

Today was a fine day for field-disc, but just tad unorthodox.  The Hogtown Wailers- after practicing for a good our- more or less formed the “1s” and lovely chaos ensued!  Sure, protocol and tradition were violated, but hey- it happens.  The Wailers- in all seriousness- did appreciate it.  Seriously!  Standard: Two games, 7/11 with an East-West set, and hot, humid weather.  You know that August feel?  Yeah.  That’s what we had.

Team 1: Coach, Pilgrim, Dan “Ghengis” Khan (sp?), Robber, Mike, Pilgrim, Showkiller, Bubba

Team 2: Lyle, Johnny, Argo, AB, Kendra, Redeemed (andy),Obama! (Huseyin), and Kink

Game One: For the first several points, the 1s looked quite good- especially in warm-ups- as they attempted to run a disciplined horizontal stack offence.  It looked good for a while, then they shifted into a “flow-vertical” type offense, which didn’t go so good.  Lyle “Callahan” Brenner picked up a Callahan, Obama!  ran well, and Nathan placed the disc quite well, resulting in a strong win. Final: 11-7, Team 2.

Game Two: The 1s returned to this game tired, but ready for some redemption.  I don’t really know what happened, but the 1s were in control the entire time, and when it was all said and done, a mirror had been made.  I’ll have to look at the boxscores to understand…. The 1s took it, by the way.  Final: 11-7, Team 1.

The LoSG occurred to perfection: 18-18

Fall Count: 2-4

September count: 2-4

Boxscores are below the fold.

See you Wednesday (today)

On this day in 1793, the Reign of Terror began if France.  This was truly a brilliant idea, where fear, revenge and paranoia were allowed to wander around unleashed.  “There is nothing to fear, but fear itself?”  I think not.  Have you ever seen a guillotine?  That would totally suck to be on the chopping end on one of those.  Those crazy French people- no wonder they love Jerry Lewis.

Tonight was a fine night for field-disc, but let me just say that the humidity was off the charts.  August is not done, even though technically, it is.  The field was nice, although Vlad the Impaler returned and set up those pole things which can kill a guy.  Standard stuff: Two games, 7/11, with an east-west set, and the port-a-potties were smelling extra chemically today.  Yum!

Team 1: Mike, Surly, Richard, Kink, Sarah, Wayne, K-swiss, and Zen

Team 2: Obama! (Huseyin), Coach, Dred, Johnny, Pilgrim, Showkiller, Smarta-Marta, and Laz

Game One: This was all 1s all day.  With three of JJ’s finest, what could the 2s do other than to look for the huck?  Defense wasn’t really a priority for either side and it showed with multiple “efficient” points.  After the 1s gained the lead, it held.  Final: 11-7, Team 1.

Game Two: If you live by the huck, you die by the huck.  Yeah, the decision making process of the 1s- like ALL of them- deteriorated like my faith in the US Constitution over the last 7 or so years.  Huck, turn, huck, turn, huck, turn… Needless to say, Smarta “whatever it takes” Marta capitalized time and time again, and so the 1s crashed and burned.  Final: 11-6, Team 2.

The LoSG did in fact occur today.  Points: 17-18, respectively.

Fall series count: 1-3

September count: 1-3

Lifetime: lost count.

Year: Again, I’ll look it up. Sorry.

Boxscores are below the fold.

See you Sunday.

On this day in 1260, the Mongols lost!  This is fairly important, since up to this point, nobody had ever really beaten them.  Sure, they lost some minor fights where they were badly outnumbered, but for the most part, they slaughtered all who got in their way.  You don’t believe me?  Look up the Kalka River.  Look it up!  I dare you.  Let me just say that those Princes didn’t wrap themselves in that carpet (or maybe they got locked in a box)- I don’t remember.

What do I do- the battle analogy?  What does that mean?  There are no words! Screw it! I’ll do it live!  Standard stuff: Two games, 7/11 with an East-West set and weather that felt almost “Autumny”.   There was no real wind, and I guess it was humid.  Did I forget anything?

Team 1: Zen, Mike, Kink, Coach, Josh, Jonathan the Pirate King, Jackie, Stripes, Richard, Redeemed (Andy), and Square.

Team 2: Lyle, Showkiller, AB, Kendra, Coleman, Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, Obama! (Huseyin), Robber, Wheels, Puller, and Pilgrim

Game One: The 1s jumped to an early lead, but alas, it wouldn’t last.  The 2s were talented and were able to keep it within two for most of the game, due to unforced errors.  In the end, the 2s decided to take care of business and threw out the zone, which worked quite well.  In a short overtime, the 2s took care of business.  Final: 12-10, Team 2.

Game Two: Oh my God, this was a disaster for the 1s from the get go.  Let’s throw it deep into triple coverage!  Yes. Brilliant!   So it was a blowout.  Besides, who would have thought that Showkiller, Pilgrim, Robber, Coleman, Puller, Lyle, and Wheels would be so dominant?  Shocking!  I’m wearing dark next Wednesday.  See ya, losers.  Final: 11-5, Team 2.

The LoSG most certainly did not occur.  Points: 15-23

Count for September: 0-2

Fall Series Count: 0-2

Lifetime Count: Not sure.

See you Friday.
